How to Choose a Name

  1. 1

Pick the personality before the words

Fearsome, funny, dark or noble. A crew that plays for laughs and a ship called The Crimson Leviathan pull against each other, and everyone at the table feels it.

  2. 2

Borrow from the sea, not from a thesaurus

Words like Abyss, Horizon and Meridian carry a nautical register without being literal. They suggest the sea without naming it, which is why they outlast Ocean and Wave.

  3. 3

    Stop at three words

Game interfaces, tournament brackets and dialogue all cut long names short. Two or three words is the band where a name survives every place it has to appear.

  4. 4

Say it out loud across a room

Hard consonants and long vowels carry through noise. Leviathan and Sovereign land. Soft, breathy names disappear the moment someone shouts them from a crow's nest.

Questions from the Deck

What is a good pirate ship name?

A good pirate ship name is two or three words, uses nautical or emotional vocabulary, and matches the crew's personality. Queen Anne's Revenge works because it names an emotion. The Wobbly Barnacle works because it commits fully to the joke.

How do you name a pirate ship?

Pick the personality first, then draw a noun from sea creatures, weather, navigation, treasure or emotion. Keep it to three words, and say it aloud before you commit. If it survives being shouted across a room, it works.

What was Blackbeard's ship called?

Blackbeard's ship was Queen Anne's Revenge, a captured French vessel he armed with roughly 40 guns in 1717. He ran it aground near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina in 1718, and the wreck was located there in 1996.

Is this pirate ship name generator free?

Yes, completely. There is no signup, no limit on how many names you can generate and no account. Names you save are stored in your own browser, never on a server.

What are real historical pirate ship names?

Real examples include Queen Anne's Revenge (Blackbeard), Whydah Gally (Samuel Bellamy), Adventure Galley (William Kidd), Royal Fortune (Bartholomew Roberts) and Fancy (Henry Every). Most were captured ships that pirates renamed.

Can I use these names in Sea of Thieves?

Sea of Thieves does not let you rename your ship freely, so these names are used for crews, alliances, streams and clan identity rather than the vessel itself. The Sea of Thieves generator explains what the game does and does not allow.

What makes a pirate name sound authentic?

Period-plausible first names such as Bartholomew, Silas or Bess, a plain English surname, and an earned epithet rather than a self-given one. Real pirates were named by their crews, which is why the epithets describe behaviour.

Are the names on this site already taken?

Some curated names come from history or fiction and are noted as such. Generated combinations are ordinary word pairings that anyone may use. For a commercial project, run a trademark search before you build a brand on one.
