Key, cay, isle, rock, holm, skerry, atoll, head, bank and spit all describe a specific kind of island, and using the right one carries information a generic name cannot. A key is a low sandy island on a reef. A skerry is a small rocky islet. A holm is a small island in a river or near a coast.
Getting that word right is the fastest way to make an invented island sound real. Bone Key reads as a low Caribbean sandbank. Bone Skerry reads as a cold northern rock. Same first word, completely different place, and you have described the geography without writing a sentence.
Naming a chain rather than one island
The most common worldbuilding mistake is naming islands individually so that a chain has no internal logic. Real archipelagos are usually named by one culture in one period, so they share vocabulary. The Scattered Keys, Bone Key, Coral Key and Fever Key clearly belong to the same map. Bone Key, Saltspire and Moonwater Atoll do not.
Pick one landform word for a chain and vary the descriptor. It costs nothing, it takes thirty seconds, and it does more for a map's credibility than any individual name.

Names like Gallows Rock and Fever Key are doing something specific: they tell you what happened there. Real place names do this constantly, because a place gets named by the people who had a reason to remember it, and the reason is usually not pleasant.
That gives you a free plot hook. If an island on your map is called Fever Key, a player will ask why, and you now have a story you did not have to plan. Use one or two of these per chain rather than all of them, since a map where every island is ominous stops being ominous.
